Its not IIT Mumbai .

This post is for those who cannot differentiate between brand names and city nomenclature.

I guess the Govt of India 50 years back while establishing one of the elite technical institutes, was unable to foresee the Raj Thackeray trend.(I guess there was no McKinsey at that time that could predict the Bombay to Mumbai campaign )
But then with absolutely no respect,(and yes I am being RUDE) IITBombay is a brand name and for the record its a single word.
Its not IIT Mumbai .

There is nothing like IIT Mumbai .
No body in the world knows IIT Mumbai.
People have known it as IIT Bombay.
Stop tagging photos on facebook as IIT Mumbai.
Stop referring it to as IIT Mumbai in thanking speeches, endnotes, debates, discussions.

That's so true. People don't tend to realise sometimes that IIT's are a brand name by themselves. Once I had an argument with a guy who insisted that IIT-M is IIT Mumbai and IIT-B is IIT Bangalore cos the names of the respective cities have changed, so the names of the IIT's have to change too, to reflect it.

Hear, hear!

It is quite silly to find people, even those from IIT Bombay, insisting on calling it IIT Mumbai. IIT Powai is another misnomer.

I have seen official signs (near the co-operative store in MB, for example) that denote IITB as IIT(M)!

its not bout the localites. I dont really expect them to refer it to as IIT Bombay coz for them IIT is as gud as Powai , but when the corporates do such a thing , its a bit frustrating at times.

You mean companies like a certain FMCG who had huge hoardings of IIT Mumbai put up during techfest?

Hmm. The IITB website itself lists the name sometimes as IITBombay, IIT-Bombay, and IIT Bombay.
(One word, two words and with a -", while the IIT act lists it as "Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay".

ref:
http://www.iitb.ac.in
http://www.iitb.ac.in/legal/IITsAct.pdf

It's logical to believe that it is not a single word then.

Also, the IITB website itself calls it as IIT Mumbai at several places. For example :
http://www.iitb.ac.in/campus/campus.html
http://www.ee.iitb.ac.in/~microel/

Therefore, though I don't know if the post was targeted towards people studying at IITB or towards the complementary set, I guess it's not a mistake of non-IITB people to not know this fact.

Peace!
